FAQ about Choosing to Live Forever

Why would anyone want to live forever?

If you are honestly asking this, then you don't belong here.

We are not trying to persuade anyone to live forever. We only offer those who wish to do so the opportunity. These FAQ about choosing to live forever are meant to address common concerns about immortality for those who would otherwise leap at the chance.

We think the reasons for living forever are obvious. If you don't, then you would be better off elsewhere.

Isn't immortality impossible?

Actually, no. Please watch De Grey's short presentation and explore the references in our links section. It's practically inevitable that immortality will become a technological reality.

Isn't it unnatural?

You're right. Getting old, dying and then rotting is natural. That doesn't make it desirable.

Isn’t it unspiritual?

Not from our perspective. Being physically alive offers more options not less in our experience.

Isn’t it against the will of God?

We do not agree with assuming that pain, disease and death are necessary experiences. We disagree with religious views that think they are.

What about all the grief I would feel for those who died?

Yes, you would probably grieve over the loss of some friends and loved ones. However, it seems likely that aging and death will become increasingly rare with time. An immortal born today may well experience no more grief than if he had lived only his "natural" lifespan.

What if the future is horrible?

The only way to know what the future will hold will be to live long enough to see for yourself. We expect the overall trend of the future to remain one of continued improvement due to the technological breakthroughs we point to on our links page.

The world keeps getting worse with more violence and hatred. Why should I want to see more of it?

Any situation can change with time, and an immortal has plenty of time. Even if this assessment about the world were true, it seems likely that future technology will change human nature and quite possibly eliminate the motives for violence and hatred.

Why should I want to be old forever?

You do not have to be. In fact, with the advances coming with anti-aging research if you are not old now you may never actually become old. And if you are already old you may very well discover what it is like to grow younger!

Won’t my soul be trapped and never evolve?

We have not found this to be so. If anything, the immortal being learns from experience and increasingly can master more and more, permitting real growth.

Will I ever be able to see my loved ones in heaven?

Not if they do not exist. Given enough time you should be able to discover what is true about such things without having to first die yourself.

Can't I use a mystical path to stay alive and never die?

Probably not. We've never met anyone who has succeeded at this. That doesn't mean it's not possible, but if it is then it's obviously not very reliable.

Can't I just use Vampirism to live forever?

If you know it works. There's no reason not to take advantage of coming technological advances as well, however.

Won’t this add to the problems of overpopulation?

It might. It might not. If you do not choose to live then this question will not matter to you because you will never know what happened.

Won't this end progress since old people would get stuck in their ways but wouldn't die?

Not in our experience. The immortal views life as an unending series of challenges and increasingly learns more skills and useful knowledge to deal with them. The more you learn, the more you can learn and love and live.

Wouldn't dictators rule forever?

That is possible. However only if they do not overstep themselves and end up being overthrown by those who disagree with them.

Isn't immortality economically unsustainable?

Yes it is. To understand the details about why this is so requires a broader understanding of the many technologies being developed for the future which are pointed to at our links page.

Shouldn’t we make way for the younger generation?

Not really. The younger generation will simply join the rest of us with unending lives. With the coming breakthroughs in technology there will be plenty of room for everyone as we develop vast tracts of unused land on this world and eventually colonize other worlds as well.

What if I get bored?

This might sometimes happen. But then in a world of growing communication and freedom, you are less likely to stay that way for very long. Just as you never really become "bored" while having a sexual orgasm, so too will you always be able to enjoy the pleasures of living over and over again, as well as new pleasures as yet undreamed of.

What would other people say?

Today most people will tend to think you were crazy.

Tomorrow most people will think that they were crazy.

The fact of the matter is that aging is nothing more than a widespread physical disease and it is scientifically inevitable that cures will be developed for it. We are very likely seeing the last generation of mortal beings on this world. When they are gone they will take with them all of their mistaken assumptions and the eternally young will live on.

Won't I be a burden on others?

It is very reasonable to expect that the older you become, the wiser, smarter and wealthier you will become. Living forever in a youthful and healthy body is, by itself, the best guarantee for being able to take care of yourself.

Won't only the very rich be able to do this?

At first that may be true. This is one of the reasons why the Temple wants each member to become wealthy and offers specific guidance in achieving that goal.
