Psychology, communications and influence
Bateson
Steps to an ecology of Mind & Mind and Nature
Bateson's observations almost created a new version of psychology all by itself.
Bloom, Howard
The Lucifer Principle
There is a lot of food for thought on the behavior of groups versus individuals, especially in their historical context. Primate dominance behavior is discussed comprehensively in how it manifests especially in group behavior. A very valuable example of how history can be useful to the individual today.
I was quite unimpressed with Howard Bloom’s other books. (Isabel, TOV Adept, 7/15/06)
Browne, Harry
How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World
Originally published in 1973, Browne outlines how you do not have to change the world or even change other people to find happiness and satisfaction in life. He carefully discussed mental "traps" that are common and how to avoid them successfully.
Carnegie, Dale
How To Win Friends and Influence People
If you honestly compliment other people and learn to be able to listen to what they say with honest interest, you will discover that people are interesting and they will respect and like you. This is the message of this immensely successful and timeless classic.
Cialdini, Robert B
Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion
Influence: Science and Practice
These two books go together, the second having course exercises included. They are focused on advertising, but the wider principles are obvious. Understanding how people, including you, are manipulated is the first step in being able to use it to your advantage, rather than being used by the psychological forces at play. Having a clue as to what the herd around you might do next clearly has survival value.
If you think you are immune to advertising and/or general herd influence, then you need to read this – again, if necessary. (Isabel, Adept, 7/15/06)
De Becker
The Gift of Fear
Ellis, Albert
Guide to Rational Living
Ellis' writings are extremely valuable.
He promotes deidentification in an extremely practical way, comprehensible to those even remotely open to change. It is one thing to tell someone to deidentify, it is quite another to show him how to do so.
I also like his ascerbic style. (Isabel, Adept, 02/11/06 )
Freud, Sigmund
The Interpretation of Dreams
In some ways Freud was truly a pioneer and his classic work offers reasons to understand why.
Fussell, Paul
Class
A fascinating and often humorous look at how class affects individual behavior and choices in N America. Reveals concepts that can be sought for slightly different class systems, such as in Britain or Europe. Another tool for getting more out of your environment. Fussell is a retired naval officer and has authored several other books, though for Our particular purposes, this is his best.
Gordon, David & Meyers-Anderson, Maribeth
Phoenix: Therapeutic Patterns of Milton H. Erickson
Milton Erickson is best know as the psychiatrist who made hypnosis accepted by the modern medical establishment. However his strategies for helping people underlined all that he did and this book deals with those underlying assumptions.
Gordon, Thomas
PET: Parent Effectiveness Training
This book contains extremely important easily learned skills for the Dayside Vampire. Along with Ellis’s Guide to Rational Living, the tools explained in PET will revolutionize your personal life for the better.
PET is focused on parents and children, but the interpersonal communication principles are universally applicable. Not only does it clearly show how to communicate well, in doing so it is inevitable for the reader to practice deidentification in very fluid contexts. The book is old, and copies are available for as little as $1, an incredible bargain. I recently noticed that there is a new edition out, which I have not looked at yet. (Isabel, Adept,7/15/06)

Signals: How To Use Body Language For Power, Success, And Love
Book Description
"It's scientific fact that people's body gestures give away their true intentions. Every day you're confronted by hundreds of different motions that can mean anything from "get lost" to "terrific idea." You too send out signals whether you realize it or not. Now you can take advantage of the secrets of body language for that extra edge of confidence and control in any situation. What it means when a man hooks his thumb in his belt. What it means when a woman exposes the soft skin on her wrist. How to control a person's gaze. The surefire methods of sexual attraction. How to take control of an interview or negotiation. The most strategic position to take at a business meetings. What kind of man straddles a chair. Why woman would hold their wineglass in both hands. How to avoid a speeding ticket and much more! Signals gives you the answers. Whether you're going for a big business deal, meeting that certain someone or aiming for a raise, Signals is your guide to unique power of communication that could change your life."
The version I have is electronic and was available online quite awhile ago. This version from 1981 is titled Body Language: How to read others thoughts by their gestures.
When we have a “hunch” or “gut feeling” that someone is lying to us its most likely because we are perceiving body language that is (contradicted by) what the person is verbally telling us. For example when a young (five years old or so) child lies they will use both hands to cover their mouth after the lie has been told. The hand is being instructed by the brain to stop the lie from coming out. Now as a teenager the gesture will have changed to only covering part of the mouth or rubbing around the mouth. As an adult the gesture has been refined from the hand starting to cover the mouth but instead will go to the nose or chin as a sophisticated tug or touch of some sort.
Some signs are obvious such as a red face from being embarrassed but others can be more difficult to pick up on.
I find myself doing many of these things throughout the day. Such as a thumbs up to the boss meaning “no worries”…you can trust I will get the job done or a crossed arms stance showing you are “taking a stance”…I’m not budging on this for I’m right.
It’s a very straight forward book with illustrations for each example. I for one have found it useful and quite entertaining and think many here will also. (Within, Adept 7/22/06)

The People of the Secret
I just finished this book, with an introduction by Colin Wilson that is almost an essay in itself, and smiled almost throughout reading it.
The author attempts to collect proof, or at least hints, of a hidden directorate steering humanity and human evolution to ever higher levels. The references he finds and elaborates on almost invariably boil down to Sufism as a driving force behind many influential religions, movements, and discoveries.
Reading it as a member of the Temple, however, this book paints a pretty good picture of how influence "from behind the scenes" can happen, and how humanity can be controlled and guided in the long term - invisibly because humans almost never look beyond the short term. For Outer Temple members who doubt that Intelligent Guidance over millenia is even possible, I recommend having a look at the formulated theories and uncovered patterns presented in this book.
Near the end of the book, some skills possessed (or supposedly possessed) by high-ranking Sufi masters are described, and interviews with Sufi masters are printed. Their skills will not seem outlandish or even unfamiliar to Vampire Sorcerers, and much of what is discussed closely resembles claims made by the Temple.
I found this book valuable, and enjoyed reading it. The author does not uncover the entire truth, but he does a good job presenting his theories and assembling proof of their validity. For a human, his research and findings are remarkable. (Aenigma, TOV Adept, 03/03/05)
Wilson, Colin
Alien Dawn
This tome, authored by Colin Wilson, is not only an excellent read, but the topic of more than a few months of "Lifeforce."
Of course, both were still in print at the time I will not spoil the read, suffice to say the parallels found in this book are very intriguing. (Solomon, Adept, 04/01/06 )
I truly enjoyed this book, which I read shortly after appearing here.
Colin Wilson has done an excellent job at both gathering an incredible amount of data regarding UFO, paranormal, and highly strange events, and in weaving it into a journey that allows the reader to consider the similarities, and the ultimate cause of these experiences.
It also made me enjoy the movie "The Mothman Prophecies" quite a bit more!

Fisher, Joe
Hungry Ghosts
From the back cover:
As a noted professional journalist, Joe Fisher was, by training and temperament, a skeptic. But in June, 1984, he found himself caught up in an eerie world of channellers, ritualistic encounters and guiding spirits.
His fascination increased when he heard the channeled voice of someone claiming to be his personal guide, and eighteenth-century Greek woman named Filipa, who said she had loved Fisher in his previous lives.
At first, Fisher was enchanted by the disembodied, all-understanding Filipa, often to the detriment of his own real-life love interest. At the same time, he remained troubled by an experience that seemed beyond reason. Falling back, finally, on his journalistic instincts, he began a painstaking, five-year investigation of the claims of Filipa and her fellow spirits. What he discovered shook and shocked him.....
JOE FISHER is a journalist and best-selling author. His previous works include Life Between Life, The Case for Reincarnation, and Predictions.
Troubled by personal problems - as well as by the spirits he claimed to have angered in writing the Siren Call of Hungry Ghosts - Joe Fisher took his own life on May 9, 2001.
That he would do so is all the more surprising considering what he had written earlier in The Case for Reincarnation: "As much as the suicidal personality feels able to escape the world by getting rid of the body, reincarnation's revolving door ensures that all hope (of escape) is short lived. Those who learn that they have killed themselves in past lives are quickly brought to the realization that suicide, far from being an answer to life's problems is (instead) the violent breaking of the lifeline. If the (suicide) could only realize the resulting intensification of difficulty which must enter the life to come, (suicide) would never be (attempted)."

Sorcery
An excellent read, "Sorcery" by J. Finley Hurley:
"The power to influence the thoughts, dreams and actions of others at great distance is one of the oldest 'facts of nature' known to man... this book gives a clear exposition... it shows that the casting of spells can be
rational and effective procedures in harmony with modern, scientific worldview... scientific evidence has never been treated in detail, until this book." (Sombranegra, Sorceress, 01/05/06)

The 4th Dimension: Toward A Geometry of Higher Reality
"What is reality?
"Take all your perceptions and all of mine, take everyone's thoughts and all the visions. In an infinite-dimensional space there is room to fit them all together; each is a piece of the infinite-dimensional One, and this One is reality.
"Reality is indescribably rich and complex. Sometimes I forget this, and life goes gray. But the world is alive, and we are living parts of it. Thoughts are as real and important as objects. Every object is an endless source of wonder.
"We don't know why we're here - we don't even know what we are. But we exist, and the world is going on. Our ordinary notions of space and time are just a convenient fiction. Higher dimensions are everywhere. There's no need to work for enlightenment; enlightenment is here and now, as close as the fourth dimension."

Nourishing Traditions
This is a cookbook, and much much more. It is packed with essays and commentary upon why particular food choices or preparation techniques are superior for one’s health. From the back cover:
“Recalling the culinary customs of our ancestors, and looking ahead to a future of robust good health for young and old, Nourishing Traditions offers modern families a fascinating guide to wise food choices and proper preparation techniques. Sally Fallon unites the wisdom of the ancients with the latest independent and accurate scientific research in over 700 delicious recipes that will please both exacting gourmets and busy parents.”
This will definitely help get one started on permanently changing one’s cooking and eating habits, without the confusion of fads, wild commercial claims, and conflicting pronouncements from authorities. (Isabel, TOV Adept, Dec 06)

Hyman, Mark
Ultrametabolism
This is an excellent guide to the workings of your particular body. Between this and Nourishing Traditions, you can make major strides in adjusting your diet to suit your own body, rather than the one-size-fits-all approaches advocated elsewhere. This will give you a grasp of what your body is doing, and how you can encourage it to remain healthy.
Hyman has supplement suggestions, most of which are marginally helpful, according to my own physician. Hyman also does not have a problem with soy, and includes it in his dietary suggestions. Soy has a lot of disruptive hormones, and the processing needed to make it palatable makes it highly suspect in terms of what’s good for your body. This is where Nourishing Traditions comes in. Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility
Product Description:
"If we could turn back the clock psychologically, could we also turn it back physically? For more than thirty years, award-winning social psychologist Ellen Langer has studied this provocative question, and now, in Counterclockwise, she presents the answer: Opening our minds to what’s possible, instead of presuming impossibility, can lead to better health–at any age.
"Drawing on landmark work in the field and her own body of colorful and highly original experiments–including the first detailed discussion of her “counterclockwise” study, in which elderly men lived for a week as though it was 1959 and showed dramatic improvements in their hearing, memory, dexterity, appetite, and general well-being–Langer shows that the magic of rejuvenation and ongoing good health lies in being aware of the ways we mindlessly react to social and cultural cues. Examining the hidden decisions and vocabulary that shape the medical world (“chronic” versus “acute,” “cure” versus “remission”), the powerful physical effects of placebos, and the intricate but often defeatist ways we define our physical health, Langer challenges the idea that the limits we assume and impose on ourselves are real. With only subtle shifts in our thinking, in our language, and in our expectations, she tells us, we can begin to change the ingrained behaviors that sap health, optimism, and vitality from our lives. Improved vision, younger appearance, weight loss, and increased longevity are just four of the results that Langer has demonstrated.
"Immensely readable and riveting, Counterclockwise offers a transformative and bold new paradigm: the psychology of possibility. A hopeful and groundbreaking book by an author who has changed how people all over the world think and feel, Counterclockwise is sure to join Mindfulness as a standard source on new-century science and healing.

A former Rosecrucian, LaBerge offers excellent guidance in understanding and achieving lucid dream in which you are awake and aware of the fact you are having a dream.
